Goathead Warriors - Trail Edition
Goathead Warriors has an inspiring origin story, it is a volunteer non-profit organization based in Wenatchee, Washington. The initiative was launched in 2016 with sponsorship by The Complete the Loop Coalition and WenatcheeOutdoors.org.
Today Goathead Warriors has partnered with TREAD to erradicate goatheads from trails.
Mission & Purpose
The Goathead Warriors mobilize volunteers to transform the Apple Capital Loop Trail to goathead‑free zones, aiming for “zero goatheads and no flat tires.” Their focus is on ensuring trail users—cyclists, dog walkers, families—can enjoy safe, flat‑free adventures.
TREAD hosts annual patrols now span approximately 20 miles of riverfront trail. Volunteers are organized into small teams assigned grid‑based sections every three to six weeks during growing season (June–October). Armed with long‑handled shovels, thick gloves, and heavy-duty bags, they sever taproots and collect burrs before seed dispersal.
Volunteer-driven, grassroots program co-led by trail advocates and community members
Regular maintenance during bee‑season (June–October), repeated every 3–6 weeks per section
Tangible impact: fewer flats, safer trail access, reduced seed spread across the region
TREAD supports this creative local effort as it aligns with our values of community‑based stewardship, inclusive access, and respectful management of public lands.
